Theatre is all about telling stories, and not every story is a happy one narrated by songs. There are ones that people wish to leave unread. First Person Shooter is one of those. It’s not a topic people openly discuss. It’s one that people shove to the back of their minds and pretend that it doesn’t exist. FPS is about a boy named Charlie who’s bullied to the point of no return. He makes a decision that changes not only his life but those of the students, parents, teachers, and community around him. He brings a gun to school.

This is how school shootings happen.

That was the name of the YouTube clip that Mr. Belk showed his actors and crew members before they went on stage to rehearse.

Bennett Monsen (12), along with the rest of his peers, watches the video clip in silence.

You could feel the attitude in the room freeze and drop. Beforehand, everyone had been enjoying snacks and saying tongue-twisters to get physically ready to practice. But being an actor is more than just a physical thing. You have to be able to submerge yourself in the emotions of whoever you’re trying to portray. And with our school being a small, sheltered and conservative one in Monument, Colorado of all places, it’s not easy to put ourselves in the shoes of a school shooter or those who are affected by it. This is a blessing of course.

But this does make it an intense challenge for those trying to pull this show off. Steven Panoncillo (12) is a social butterfly in real life.

Several members of the cast pause their scene to receive feedback from Mr. Belk.

However, in the show he plays a victim of ostracism. Ciara Abeyta (11) is a sweet and polite girl in reality. But in the show she plays a harsh and forceful girl. Not only is the theme of the show a risk, the roles are risky for each actor too.

The one act will be performed the first week of February. The cast and crew have been pouring themselves into it since December. Shows with all smiles aren’t the only ones worth seeing.
