Journalists at The Bear Truth were honored for their October presidential endorsement of Hillary Clinton, and subsequent coverage of the ensuing controversy, by the Colorado Student Media Association (CSMA). The recognition was a part of the first ever Fearless Coverage Challenge.

Co-editor-in-chief Anna Schnelbach was extremely honored by the award, saying it makes her “feel like people respect high school journalism, and our our opinion regarding issues that are bigger than our current environment.”

The Bear Truth submitted the Clinton endorsement, along with coverage of the vandalism incident and media coverage to the competition. They were presented with a $300 voucher for any CSMA event for the 2017 school year. The competition was judged by CU journalism professor Jeff Browne, CSMA Executive Director Jack Kennedy, and Mary Beth Tinker.

The competition was part of the yearlong CSMA theme, “FEARless.” The staff was honored earlier in the year by CSMA at the state journalism convention with an autographed armband by Mary Beth Tinker.

Adviser Tom Patrick said he was “extremely proud of my students, especially my editors.”
